When drivers evade police, they are not only breaking the law, but they are putting others' lives at risk. Two men were arrested in West Palm Beach over the weekend after a police chase led to a car accident that left three unassuming motorists hurt.
It started in West Palm Beach when a city police officer noticed a black Chevy Impala run a stop sign at 44th Street and Windsor Avenue. The car kept going, even after police went after it. The driver violated numerous traffic laws in the process, from running stop signs to driving on the wrong side of the road.
The Impala apparently ran a second stop sign, and then hopped onto northbound Interstate 95, getting off at the Blue Heron Boulevard exit. The 28-year-old driver, who had a passenger in tow, then headed east on that road, then drove the wrong way in the northbound lanes of North Congress Avenue.
The car kept blowing through stop signs and ultimately collided with a vehicle that was headed south on Australian Avenue, according to the Palm Beach Post. The vehicle that was struck rolled over, causing its three occupants to sustain injuries. They were taken to St. Mary's.
The driver of the Impala and his passenger apparently got out of the vehicle after driving to a nearby residence. The driver ran from the scene on foot, but was ultimately caught, while his passenger threw himself to the ground and apparently refused to cooperate with police.
They now find themselves in hot water. The driver was charged with leaving the scene of an accident with injuries, fleeing and eluding and driving with a suspended license, among other charges. The passenger was charged with resisting arrest without violence.
Sadly, what could have ended as a routine traffic stop turned into a chaotic chase that left three innocent people injured.
