Traveling on the highway during the early morning hours can be daunting in the best of conditions. Intense fog and dark, smoky skies were among the conditions cited as a cause of a multiple-car accident that occurred on Interstate 75 on Sunday, Jan. 29. The fatal accident resulted in the deaths of 10 people and injuries to many others. The car crash happened at 3:45 a.m. and involved cars, a motor home and several tractor-trailers.
Authorities report that the highway had been closed just prior to the accident because of an earlier accident. Officers at the scene reviewed conditions and made the determination that the road was safe for drivers to travel. After the traffic accident, a review of the decision to open the highway has been ordered by the Florida governor.
When people are injured or killed in a car accident, personal injury claims often result. The costs of recovery can be significant, and victims of a car crash may be entitled to compensation. Medical bills, lost wages, and pain and suffering are among the damages that can be collected by accident victims and their families.
In this Florida case it is unclear what caused the fatal collision. Though weather conditions may have been a factor, investigators will likely work to determine if the negligence of one or more drivers contributed to the crash. If the accident is found to be the fault of a particular driver or group of drivers, those drivers could be held responsible through personal injury claims from the accident victims and their families. Furthermore, if the decision to open the roadway under severe weather conditions is determined to be a contributing cause to the fatal collisions, additional liability may lie against the authorities responsible for that action.
